 A new VC, new curriculum for Andhra IIITs

: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) here has got a new Vice-Chancellor after two years, who plans to changR.V. Raja Kumar, the new vice-chancellor of RGUKTe the curriculum on the pattern of IIT Kharagpur.

The new vice-chancellor, R.V. Raja Kumar, a senior professor at IIT-Kharagpur, will introduce engineering courses on the lines of IIT-Kharagpur in its three IIITs at Idupulapaya, Nuzvidu and Basar from the 2010-11 academic year.

This will enable the first batch of 6,000 students, who joined the IIITs in the 2008-09 academic year after completing SSC, get admission to engineering courses this year.

However, the engineering courses in the IIITs will be different from the conventional colleges. All students will have to undergo training in basic engineering courses till the third year and will be admitted to specialised branches in the fourth and final year, based on their performance.

Moreover, students will have to undergo training in computer science engineering as the university was established with the objective of imparting world class computer education.

"After undergoing common training for the first three years, we will admit students in the specialised branches," said an official of RGUKT.

The governing council of RGUKT met on January 17 to finalise the introduction of engineering courses. It was decided to appoint Prof. R.V. Raja Kumar vice-chancellor of RGUKT.

Prof. Kumar, who started his career as a member of faculty of telecommunication engineering at IIT Kharagpur, is presently serving as a professor in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering.

Till now the Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education, Dr K C Reddy was officiating as the vice-chancellor of the university.

Ratnam V. Raja Kumar was born in Machilipatnam on February 27,1958. He received his BE degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, topping all branches of engineering in 1980, M.Tech., in Microwave & Radar Engineering and Ph.D. in Digital Signal Processing in 1982 and 1987 respectively from IIT, Kharagpur.
